[Picking up a stone thrown at him for preaching Universalism, John Murray says:]
This argument is solid, and weighty, but it is neither rational, nor convincing.

Our Universalism is a heresy. We believe that if there is a loving God, this God will save all souls. If, in some other realm, there is a great clubhouse of souls, everybody’s getting in. Catholics, Protestants, Jews, Muslims, agnostics, atheists: everybody’s getting in.

We must get better at Universalist values of love and forgiveness, hope and courage…these are the virtues of the work of the spirit.

To me, the highest type of religious experience is that which gives people a sense of unity and universality. Most of our life is spent in narrow segments. Our horizon is hemmed in by kitchen walls, office desks, narrow prejudices of race, class, or creed. In religion, these partialisms, broken fragments of life, are lifted into a vast and profound oneness. Our littleness becomes stretched to cosmic greatness. Elemental forces roll through our beings, sensitize our perceiving, and quicken our lives.

It is easy to gain the right to palliate when charity is popular. It is easy to boast of the similitude of social freedom, to hide slavery behind the mask of relief. But it is hard to win the freedom to eradicate, the blaze the trail, to risk prestige, popularity, ease, in a fight against the causes of misery.

An institution or reform movement that is not selfish, must originate in the recognition of some evil that is adding to the sum of human suffering, or diminishing the sum of happiness.

Free discussion is the soul of democracy and the guarantee of our liberties. It should therefore be maintained in our congregations, colleges, and public platforms, and limited only by mutual self-respect and courtesy

Whatever you do, do it with all your might. Work at it, early and late, in season and out of season, not leaving a stone unturned, and never deferring for a single hour that which can be done just as well now.
