It is so small thing
To have enjoy’d the sun,
To have lived light in the spring,
To have loved, to have thought, to have done

The Spirit of Love, wherever it is, is its own blessing and happiness; because it is the truth and reality of God in the soul; and therefore is the same joy of life, and is the same good to itself everywhere and on every occasion.

Joy is the infallible sign of the presence of God.

The truth is that love makes us answerable for joy. Only selfishness gives us the right to nurse our aggravations. Love demands that it be shared and multiplied.

The Sufi Teacher Rabi’a came to Hasan with three things: a candle, a needle, and a hair. She said to Hasan: “Be like the candle: give light to the world as you yourself burn. Be like the needle: work hard, and have nothing to protect you. Then, like the hair, you will last forever.

Words are less needful to sorrow than to joy.

I hear you, little bird,
Shouting aswing above the broken wall.
Shout louder yet: no song can tell it all.
Sing to my soul in the deep still wood:
‘Tis wonderful beyond the wildest word:
I’d tell it, too, if I could

Tears of joy are like the summer rain drops pierced by sunbeams.

God has shouted ‘Yes! Yes! Yes!’ to every luminous movement in Existence.
