As the issues of immigration continue to trouble in the U.S., take some time to consider what mandatory detention means for thousands of people. Any law that dehumanizes some, dehumanizes too the people who accept and enforce those laws.
I was introduced to the Receiving Communities Initiative thanks to the Side of Love campaign. I appreciate how this program gives folks real tools to engage each other with compassion and become better neighbors, including opening the way to a more generous hospitality. The RCI relates directly to migration issues and how we can live better together, choosing a healthy pluralism.
Detention Watch brings us a free and engaging report on alternatives to detention when we’re dealing with immigration issues. Congregations working on immigration issues will want to study and understand this report, and, perhaps will find some actions to encourage in the larger community for a more merciful justice and immigration reform.
This is a cool high school and middle school curriculum that helps students appreciate the different causes and patterns of migration. I think this kind of basic introduction gives part of the reasons for why immigration is a justice matter for Unitarian Universalists. Let’s see if your youth agree!
